How to read a crack before anyone quotes you a price
Cracks are evidence, and the pattern tells you most of what you need to know. Before you call anyone, it is worth spending ten minutes with a flashlight and a tape measure, because the answers change what kind of repair you are shopping for.
Start with direction. Vertical and near-vertical cracks in a poured concrete wall are the most common and the least alarming. Concrete shrinks as it cures, and it relieves that stress by cracking, usually within the first year and usually near a window opening or a form tie. These leak but they rarely mean structural trouble. Diagonal cracks that run at roughly forty-five degrees from a corner suggest one part of the footing has dropped. Horizontal cracks, especially in block, mean lateral soil pressure and are the ones that need attention soonest.
Then look at width and taper. A crack that is the same width top to bottom is generally separating in one plane. A crack that is noticeably wider at one end is rotating, which means differential movement. Location matters too. Cracks at the corners of window and door openings are stress concentrations and are extremely common. Cracks that run through the middle of an uninterrupted wall panel, or that continue through both the wall and the floor slab, carry more weight as evidence.
Finally, find out whether it is active. Mark both ends of the crack with a pencil line and the date, and measure the width at a marked point. Check it again in three months and again after a wet stretch. A crack that has not moved in six months is a different conversation than one that opened a sixteenth of an inch over a winter. A five-dollar crack monitor from a hardware store does this more precisely if you want the number rather than the impression.
One more piece of evidence is worth gathering, and it costs nothing. Note the conditions under which the crack changes. A crack that widens during a dry late summer and closes again through a wet spring is tracking expansive clay shrinking and swelling under the footing, which is a soil moisture problem and responds to drainage consistency around the perimeter. A crack that widens steadily and never recovers is tracking progressive settlement, which does not fix itself and generally needs underpinning. A crack that leaks heavily during storms but does not measurably change width is a water path rather than a structural symptom.
Bringing that observation to an inspection genuinely shortens the diagnosis, because it supplies the one thing a contractor standing in your basement for ninety minutes cannot see for themselves: how the crack has behaved across a full year of seasons.
Repair methods, and when each one is right
Epoxy injection
Poured concrete walls where the crack is structural and stable. Epoxy is stronger than the concrete around it and welds the wall back into one piece. Not appropriate for cracks that are still moving.
Polyurethane injection
Cracks that leak. Urethane foams on contact with water, fills irregular voids, and stays flexible enough to tolerate minor seasonal movement. This is the usual choice for a wet vertical crack in a Lynchburg basement.

What happens if you just paint over it
Surface patching an active crack is the most common wasted expense in this category. Hydraulic cement and masonry caulk bond to the outer inch of the wall. If water is arriving under pressure from the other side, or if the two sides of the crack are still moving relative to each other, the patch debonds and the crack reappears, usually within a year and often looking worse because the patch material fails in chunks.
The other cost is diagnostic. A patched crack hides the evidence. If the crack was the visible symptom of settlement or lateral pressure, covering it does not slow the underlying movement, it just removes your ability to monitor it. Homeowners who patch every spring for four years frequently arrive at an inspection with far more movement than they realized, because they erased the record.
Water moving through a crack also carries mineral out of the concrete and soil in from outside. Over years, that erodes the crack faces and washes fines out of the bearing soil right behind the wall, which is exactly the material you need to stay put.
Why block walls crack so reliably around Lynchburg
Concrete masonry unit walls are hollow, and a hollow wall has very little resistance to being bent. Lynchburg's combination of expansive red clay, sloped lots that concentrate runoff against uphill walls, and a winter that crosses the freezing line repeatedly rather than staying frozen produces exactly the lateral load that block walls are worst at handling. Ports, surface seal, and pressure injection reach the back face. Troweling material into the visible groove does not.

If a downspout is dumping against that wall, sealing the crack alone buys you a year.
What is the warranty if it leaks again?
Reputable crack injection carries a written warranty against re-leaking at that crack. Get the length in writing.

Can I just use hardware store crack filler?
