A settled slab is almost never a concrete problem. Concrete is strong and stable; the ground under it is what moved. Usually that means backfill that was never compacted properly, soil washed out by water running along a foundation or under a driveway, or organic material in the subgrade that decomposed and left a void.
That distinction matters because it determines whether lifting makes sense. If the slab is intact and simply sitting lower than it should, lifting is straightforward and costs a fraction of replacement. If the slab has broken into multiple pieces, is heavily spalled from years of freeze-thaw and de-icing salt, or is too thin for its use, lifting it just gives you a broken slab at the correct elevation.
Polyurethane foam injection is the current standard method. Small holes, roughly the diameter of a penny, are drilled through the slab in a grid. Two-part polyurethane is injected and expands in place, first filling every void beneath the slab, then compacting loose soil, and finally generating enough force to raise the concrete. The lift happens in controlled stages while elevation is monitored, so the operator can stop precisely at the target height.
Traditional mudjacking pumps a cement and soil slurry through much larger holes, typically an inch and a half or more. It works, and it is sometimes less expensive, but it has two drawbacks worth knowing. The slurry is heavy, adding significant weight to the same soil that already failed to support the slab, and it can wash out over time if water continues to move under the slab. The larger patches are also far more visible.
There is a third option people forget: filling voids without lifting. If a slab is at an acceptable elevation but sounds hollow, injecting foam to fill the void supports it and prevents the cracking that would otherwise happen the next time a vehicle rolls over the unsupported section. It is cheaper than lifting and it prevents the problem rather than correcting it.
Deciding whether a slab is worth lifting comes down to a few things you can assess yourself before anyone quotes it. Tap across the surface and listen for hollow areas, which tell you where the voids are. Count the cracks and look at how the pieces relate to each other: a slab in two or three large sound pieces lifts well, while one broken into many small pieces will not come up as a unit. Check the surface condition, because concrete that is spalling and flaking from years of freeze-thaw and de-icing salt has a limited remaining life regardless of elevation. And look at thickness at any exposed edge, since a driveway poured too thin for vehicle traffic will keep cracking no matter how well the subgrade is supported.
